New World Standard? Snell unveils M2010

ROUNDUP

Motorcycle helmets sold in the U.S. must meet Federal Motor Safety Standard 121, better known in two-wheel circles as “DOT.” Using its independent certification process, the Snell Memorial Foundation has for years come up with its standard. The latest, M2010, goes into effect this October.

In recent years, Snell has used for its two-hit laboratory drop test the same 5-kilogram (11-pound) head form to evaluate five shell sizes. M2010 utilizes progressively

heavier head forms-from 3.1 kg (6.8 lb.) to 6.1 kg (13.5 lb.)—in six shell sizes. Whether a Snell M2010-approved helmet will also meet Europe’s ECE 22-05 is not clear (Snell-certified helmets are currently legal in Europe for competition-use only).

What does this mean for you, the Snell M201 0-approved helmet-wearer? More energy-absorbent helmet liners op timized for specific shell sizes. Better protection no matter the size of your melon.
