FAST TIMES AT BONNEVILLE HIGH
The motorcycle-only speed trials at Utah's mile-high Bonneville Salt Flats, inaugurated last year by exhaust-maker BUB Enterprises, will gain full international status in 2005.
The FIM, world sanctioning body for motorcycle sport, has accepted BUB’s speed contest as an “International Prize Event.” World championships must be a series, not one contest per season, so IPE it is.
The FIM, in conjunction with the AMA, has drawn up a complete set of rules and classes for the trials, scheduled for September 5-9. In keeping with speed-trial tradition, the rules provide contests for just about any vehicle on two wheels from full-on streamliners (like the BUB-sponsored ’liner pictured below) down to scooters.
The inaugural event was a roaring success, thanks largely to sponsor and long-time land-speeder Denis Manning, other generous corporations and a host of sporting volunteers. And as the FIM representative here says, where else can the backyard builder compete with the factories to set world records and win prize money?
Sound like fun? The full rules are posted on the FIM website (www.fim.ch), or send an e-mail to eventinfo@speedtrials bybub for more information. Registration is open now. See you on the salt.
