Ups & Down
UP: To friend of the magazine Tom Overbey, for passing on a good tip in case of emergency. Paramedics often turn to an incapacitated crash victim’s cell phone for clues to that person’s identity. They scan the contacts list for “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) followed by the name and number of the person emergency services should contact on your behalf, saving time at a critical moment. We’ve already updated our contact lists and suggest you do the same.
DOWN: To the “kids,” for letting the old guys get the best of them. At the 11th-annual X Games held this past August in Carson, California, 35-year-old Doug Henry and 33-year-old Jeremy McGrath finished 1-2 in the star-studded, 40lap Supermoto race, outdistancing twenty-something thirdand fourthplace finishers Chad Reed and Eric Bostrom. Forty-year-old (!) Kurt Nicoll rounded out the top-five. So much for retirement...
UP: To Racing 2 Save Lives, for, uh, saving lives. Over a five-day period this past May, some 200 riders and racers logged 40,000 miles around Colorado’s Pikes Peak International Raceway to raise more than $130,000 for children’s charities. This year’s second annual event proved so popular that organizers are looking to add two more days in 2006. To find out how you can be a part, log onto www.racing2savelives.org.
UP: To Aerostich/RiderWearHouse for making its 196-page full-color catalog a fun read. There isn’t just stuff to buy, but many sidebars, quotes and joke items “of dubious commercial value,” while the descriptions of products also often have a humorous twist. For a free copy, visit www.aerostich.com or call 800/222-1994.
