COSTA RICA CALL-OUT

Time was, touring Costa Rica meant getting dirty—really dirty. And while that’s still possible, MotoAdventures’ new on-road tours provide a paved alternative to messing around in the muck. Covering approximately 1000 miles (with an average of five corners per mile in the mountains) in five days, tour-takers visit three volcanoes and the Central American country’s Pacific Coast on Triumph Sprints. Perperson cost is $2495, which includes airport pickup, bike maintenance, bilingual guide services, gas, lodging, meals and radios. To make a reservation, contact MotoAdventures at 440/392-0926 or visit its website at www.motoadventuring. com.

INDIAN UPRISING

The AMA is celebrating Indian’s 100th anniversary with a new exhibit at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio. Ribbon-cutters at the July 7th opening of “A Century of Indian” included former Wrecking Crew members Bobby Hill and Bill Turnan,

plus Laura Lund, granddaughter of Peter Anderson, builder of the famous Indian Arrow streamliner. Billed as the largest and most ambitious exhibit ever developed by the museum, the display will run through December, 2002.

SOUND ADVICE

Been busted by stepped-up off-road exhaust noise regulations? Then you’d best arm yourself with a copy of the MIC’s recently revised Stationary Sound Test Manual for Off-Highway Motorcycles and All-Terrain Vehicles. “Reducing sound is an important part of keeping public lands open,” says Russ Ehnes, Executive Director of the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council. “We encourage riders to use the manual to ensure responsible sound levels.” For your copy, call the MIC at 949/727-4211 ext. 3012, or NOVHVCC at 920/458-3446.

SPEEDWAY FOR JUNIORS

What does a budding speedway racer want for Christmas? A Shupa SW 100-Junior, of course. Developed by ex-Jawa engineers, the Czech-made, Honda-powered sideways-slider produces a

claimed 7.5 horsepower from its air-cooled, 97cc, single-cylinder four-stroke engine. Other highlights include a four-speed tranny, 19/16-inch wheels and a 119pound dry weight. Contact the Shupa rep at bcpolymer@volny.cz.

VETTER FLIES THE COOP

Remember Craig Vetter, creator of the popular Windjammer line of fairings? Semi-retired and living in northern California, Vetter has been noodling on motorcycling’s future. “Nobody has mastered the first 10 feet of air space,” Vetter claims. “I want a motorcycle that flies 10 feet off the ground.

I’m working on funding for an AirScooter contest. I would like to fund it for five years, and give away $1 million.” For more information on the contest, including its rules, go to www.craigvetter.com.

LEAN STREAK

In September’s test of the Kawasaki Vulcan Mean Streak, we printed the wrong weight figures. The text should have read 672 pounds with the gas tank empty and 699 pounds full of fuel. Also, maximum possible camshaft duration is 720 degrees, not 360 as stated. Apologies on both counts.
