Superior ankle protection

Is SIDI’S VERTEBRA RACE A TITANIC leap forward in crash defense, or tech overkill?

Yes, on both accounts.

Foundation for the Race’s extensive support structure is the Italian bootmaker’s Vertebra System. Designed to enhance calf-to-heel protection without hindering on-bike movement, the patented articulating spine is double stitched to the boot’s upper. Not so the replaceable Ankle Support and Sole Rigidity Systems, both of which are secured with Allen-head screws. Ditto the calf-height

"curb deflector" and shin/ toe guards.

Intended to minimize torsional stresses with out impeding fore/aft flex, the hinged ankle support con-

sists of two beefy molded-plastic pieces and runs the height of the boot. The sliding plastic sole adjuster, meanwhile, in conjunction with a stiffer-than-steel composite shank, enhances sole rigidity and protects the outside of the foot in a fall or slide.

On the bike, everything works well. Out of the saddle, however, the sole is stiff and the ankle brace squeaks when you walk. Also, depending on its posi tion, the sole adjuster can pop out of position. To relocate it, a supplied tool is required. Not included are replace ment screws, one of which came adrift during testing. Sidi now adds Loctite at the factory.

Minor quibbles. Sidi deserves credit for producing a highly protective piece of riding gear. The Vertebra Race isn't for everyone, especially when you con sider the price, but for crash-conscious riders it's a step in the right direction.~
