TRACTION CALLING
EVER HEARD OF A HIGHmileage, ultra-sticky sportbike tire? Conventional wisdom would suggest this is a contradiction. But according to British tire maker Avon, the unique Variable Belt Density (VBD) construction of its all-new Azoro radial tires will set new mileage standards for sportbike rubber. Like many of its competitors’ latest radiais, the rear Azoro AV36 employs jointless-belt construction, in which a continuous strand of aramid fiber is wound around the circumference of the tire casing. But with Avon’s VDB concept, the strands are widely spaced in the shoulder area, then gradually wound to a much tighter density in the center. The dense center is said to reduce distortion and squirm for optimum highspeed stability and improved mileage, while the pliable shoulder area is said to maintain overall bump compliance and offer improved cornering grip, even with a more durable rubber compound. Avon also claims that the VDB concept eliminates the “step” feel common with tires that are worn flat in the center.
The rear Azoro features a radical four-groove swirling tread pattern that gives the tire a look all its own. The manufacturer says this pattern offers exceptional water dispersal and promotes even wear, while leaving large uncut surface areas for optimum grip in dry conditions. The front Azoro, called the AV35, features a more conventional tread pattern and casing designed to give neutral turn-in and exceptional wet-weather braking.
The new Azoros are available in sizes to fit most latemodel sportbikes with 17-inch wheels, with prices ranging from $145 to $200.
Cycle World recently sampled a set of the new Avons on a 1997 Suzuki GSX-R600, and we were impressed by the tires’ grip in both wet and dry conditions. The Azoros feel better planted when stone-cold than most other sport tires, and this can be a real confidence-booster early in a ride. Steering is neutral, though slightly heavier feeling than we experienced with the Michelin Hi-Sports fitted to the GSX-R for last month’s 600cc sportbike comparison.
While we can’t yet comment on Avon’s mileage claims, our next step will be to spoon a set of Azoros onto our Yamaha YZF600R long-term testbike. We’ll keep close score, note any handling degradation as the tires wear and report back in the future. -Don Canet
