UPS AND DOWNS
UP: To the Cross of Christ Community Church, located in Eagan, Minnesota, for its respectful attitude toward motorcycle riders. The church hosts an annual Ride-to-Church Sunday, which includes a free meal, outdoor service and live music. Last year, more than 150 people rode to the event, and children and church goers were given rides.
"The community and congrega tion had a great day," writes Pastor Rich Breu, who rides a Honda Gold Wing. "Several hundred people were introduced to bikes and riders. People got to see that motorcyclists are real, decent folks, and the bike nders were well received and ac cepted." Amen.
UP: To Pontiac, for a unique, inno vative approach to motorsports sponsorship. This year, Pontiac is supporting Pro Stock motorcycle drag racer Steve Johnson. As John son says, "it is virtually unheard of to have a company like Pontiac in volved in motorcycle racing, but when you stop and think about it, it's a natural. Pontiac's themes of `Proven Performance' and `Driving Excitement' fit perfectly with what we're doing."
DOWN: To Atlas Edif ions, for the poor execution of a good idea. The company created motorcycle racing trading cards, but, as Brian Fischer, a CW reader from San Jose, Calif or nia, notes, the cards are riddled with errors and the text is sensationalist. Wayne Rainey Is said to be an Aus tralian and GP racing is "indisputably the most spectacular form of motor sport. 500cc Grand Prix racing is a 190-mph clash of wildmen astride 160-horsepower firebreattiing terror cycles, stabbing at the envelope of thrills and danger."
