MEGA BYTES ON BIKES, BIKES, BIKES

New motorcycling roads are pop- ping up all over the Information Superhighway. There’s everything from America Online’s Cycle World Online, to message boards covering subjects from current racing to vintage mounts.

Other commercial services offering motorcycle information are Genie (800/6389636), whose roundtable forum includes the AMA and Motorcycle Consumer News. CompuServe (800/848-8990) is the online home to Rider magazine, and Prodigy (800/776-3449) also offers a motorcycle discussion area. Wheelbase (800/6828441), is an all-digital car/motorcycle magazine with an easy-to-use interface.

You’re not limited to North American contacts, thanks to the World Wide Web, a graphical, point-and-click interface that works with the Internet, an international computer network. The Internet is no longer the domain of hard-core wireheads, because companies like Primenet (800/463-8386) and Netcom (800/3536600) sell software preconfigured for using the Web.

Once you’re on the net, Motorcycle Online (Brent@motorcycle. com,) an all-digital magazine, is a gathering point for enthusiasts. There are also dozens of special-interest sites on the Web, including Buell (E-mail: info@buell.com), which provides a virtual tour of the Buell factory.

The Internet also has a bulletin board system, Usenet News, where you can read messages and add thoughts; the newsgroup “rec.motorcycles” is the most popular. Drop by the “news.lists” newsgroup to find a directory of E-mail lists, which are interactive discussion groups deposited directly to your E-mail box.

Whatever your computer sophistication and areas of motorcycle interest, there’s something on the Infobahn for you.
