UPS AND DOWNS

UP: To Inside Motocross magazine, for its captivating look at motocross racing. The large-format, high-gloss quarterly is edited by journalist/ photographer Fran Kuhn and is filled with stunning photography and a variety of entertaining, well-written features. Subscriptions to the magazine, which debuted in January, cost $23.95 per year and are available from AXO Sport America, 24950 Anza Drive, Valencia, CA 91355-9868.

DOWN: To journalist Carol Ryan, for her editorial, “A Few Ideas to Help Make Holiday Driving a Little Gentler” published in The Daily Breeze, a Torrance, California, newspaper. In the article, Ryan wrote, “Sometimes it feels so good to let another driver have it. Really cut loose. Kind of like opening the door on a white-lining motorcyclist as he whizzes past. Wouldn’t that be great?” A number of the paper’s 82,000 readers, including Allan Girdler Jr., son of the former CW editor, wrote to the paper demanding an apology. In response, Ryan said, “It was a joke. It was meant to be funny. For some people it wasn’t, and forthat I’m sorry.”

UP: To actor Brian Austin Green, for endorsing safe motorcycling. Best known for his starring role on Fox Television’s “Beverly Hills, 90210,” the 19-year-old Green is the focus of a public service announcement for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Developed in conjunction with Suzuki, the ad bills Green, who rides a GSX-R600, as one of the MSF’s “star pupils.” After honing his street skills at an MSF Experienced RiderCourse, Green recently spent a day twisting dirtbike throttles with Suzuki motocrossers Jeff Matiasevich and Denny Stephenson.
