DESTINATIONS

Palm Canyon Resort

Borrego Springs, California

NICE HOTELS, GREAT ROADS AND locations that stay warm even during the winter months aren’t all that uncommon, by themselves. Finding them all rolled into one, however, is very uncommon.

The Palm Canyon Resort is such a place, a comfortable and modern hotel, complete with full-service restaurant, that’s located smack at the base of State Route 22, in Borrego Springs, California, in the heart of that state’s Low Desert region.

How low? The elevation at Borrego Springs is approximately 500 feet above sea level. That means it gets downright hot during the summer.

But during winter, daytime temperatures below the 60s are rare.

Best of all, though, is that Borrego Springs is located right on the margin between the Low Desert and the mountains of the Cleveland National Forest, an area etched with wonderfully maintained but lightly traveled roads. One of our favorites is S-22, a challenging piece of the roadbuilder’s art that plunges down a steep, rocky mountainside, using a broad catalog of curves to empty out, finally, onto the desert floor a few hundred yards from the hotel driveway. Is this convenient, or what?

This is a good weekend trip for any SoCal resident. In fact, it’s a good weekend trip no matter where you live. Jon F Thompson
