Standard issue

Your story on the Suzuki VX800 in the February issue was very timely. My wife wants to ride, and is taking the MSF course. I think the Suzuki will be ideal for her, and if she ever gets it away from me, I'm sure she'll love it.

Cliff Beasley Jacksonville, Florida

In regards to the resurgence of standard bikes, thumbs up to the manufacturers for listening to the people. But most of all, thumbs up to the enthusiasts who cared enough to speak up, and to your magazine forgetting the information to the manufacturers.

I'm speaking about bikes like the Honda Hawk GT. the BMW K75 and the real jewel, Suzuki's new VX800. Although it is powered by a V-Twin (but since I have an affection for Ducatis, that's acceptable), it reminds me of what bikes in the 1970s used to represent: freedom and character. Freedom to buy a stock bike and build a little of your own character into it. Freedom to make it “your bike" instead of one in a series of 10,000, with your name on the title the only difference between it and the other 9999.

Cory Weber Lawrence, Kansas

I wait every month with great anticipation hoping one of the Big Four will finally introduce a standard motorcycle at a good price. I can't understand how they could have forgotten how to build one in such a short time.

For now. I'll just wait and have a look at the VX800, but what I really want is a true standard motorcycle with a standard riding position (for example, the 1979 Honda CB750). When that’s built, I think everyone will be in line right behind me.

Hot Darn!

I just don't need it. I look at my Crc/c World magazine before I look at bounce notices from the bank. So. what's the deal with the four-letter word (`i-lot Damn!") on the March issue's cover? C' mon folks, I get enough profanity from TV and the movies, where I can turn it off. I don't need it in my motorcycle magazine.

Steve Worman Bluffton, Indiana

Over the years of reading your magazine, I have observed a tendency to incorporate profane terms in your articles, slowly growing to a crescendo with your March edition, which has one such word on the cover in large print. I have to ask myself, why? Do you consider profanity to be an integral part of the vernacular of motorcyclists?

John Njord Murray, Utah

I think Cycle World is the best damn motorcycle magazine on the market.

In the club

Your November, 1989, “Vintage Revival Issue,” brought back memories of my old racing days as a member of A.J.M.C. (All Japan Motorcycle Club), a group made up of G.I.s serving in Japan. We raced CL72s, YDS2s and old Twins in scrambles races, and had a great time. I would like to contact the former members of this club for a possible reunion.
