DESTINATIONS
Mt. Cheaha, Alabama
DO YOU WANT TO RIDE INTO THE highlands of the Southeast, but time doesn't permit a full exploration of the fabled Smokey Mountains? Then a good bet is Mt. Cheaha in north-central Alabama.
Mt. Cheaha, at an elevation of 2407 feet, the highest point in the state, is about an hour east of Birmingham, just off I-20, about 25 miles south of Anniston, and 25 miles north of Talladega. The road to the top has many great corners and the pavement is in good condition.
The view from the top is worth the trip. And even better, there is a fine restaurant there, complete with a glass wall that affords a panoramic view of the lake below and of the surrounding counties. Accommodations include a castle-like lodge that sleeps 250 and a motel that features rustic cabins—but not too rustic.
Each has television, and there's also a swimming pool. For those who wish to rough it, there's also a campground. And for those would like a brief hike, there are well-marked trails that lead to scenic overlooks.
The mountain originally was surveyed and mapped by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The CCC built all the cabins, the observation tower, and the lodge.
For a great ride that features fine scenery and good food, this destination, which is one of Alabama's best-kept secrets, is hard to beat.
