DUNES!

CYCLE WORLD’S guide to America’s sand dunes

THERE'S MORE TO THEM THAN HUGE PILES OF SAND blown hither and yon by the fickle wind; they are whole ecological systems. Not only that, dune systems are as varied from one another as are trees in the torest. Desert dune systems have a took and texture that are qualitatively different than that of sea or lakeside dunes. Each system has a unique personality, one that changes every day with the shifting winds. That's what makes dune riding so appealing.

In the latest round of ATV advertising, dune riding has been compared with snow skiing and flying. That’s because in a really good system there are few obstacles. Sure, there may be a few stumps or occasional rocks, but generally, dunes provide a smooth, varied surface consisting of hills, razorbacked wind-formed ridges, and dished-out bowls. In non-vegetated sand dunes, there’s also a primal feel that this land is not only unspoiled, but unspoilable as the shifting sands cover vehicle tracks and subtly reshape the area for future riding.

There are sand dune systems all over the country, but not all that many of them are legal and/or managed riding areas. We’ve compiled a list of the major dune riding areas around the country to give you a guide to the systems. This isn’t a complete listing of every sand dune in America, but it is a good reference, with valuable, basic information about each system.
