SUZUKI GSX-R1100

MODIFICATIONS TO THE GSX-R1l00 engine were straightforward and fairly extensive: bigger carburetors (the just-available 36mm Mikuni smoothbores), a ported head, 1mm-oversize stock Suzuki pistons (bringing displacement to 1080cc and maintaining a streetable compression ratio), longer-duration cams and a competition exhaust pipe. This $2300 of engine work produced an engine both powerful and with a broad powerband: torque stays above 80 ft.-lb. from 7000 rpm all the way to 10,000, and power doesn’t fall off until past 11,000 rpm. The idle is lumpy, though, throttle effort has increased, and no air filters are fitted. The competition exhaust isn’t offensive at low engine speeds, but at full chat is loud for the street.

Chassis modifications (the ones that worked) were equally simple. Vance & Hines-distributed ProLite wheels offer mainly a cosmetic advantage over stock; at 4.25 inches, the rear rim is only a quarter inch wider than stock, and the wheels are close in weight. More important are the Goodyear slick and the wheelie bar, without which the short-coupled GSX-R would never be able to put its power to the ground in first and second gears.
