STYLE.EITHER YOU'VE GOT IT OR YOU AIN'T. BUT THE QUEStion is, just what is style?

That question so intrigued the editors of GQ, a monthly magazine "for the modern man," that they devoted the entire January issue to finding the answer. A good issue, really, what with Cary Grant ("style beyond compare," said GQ) smiling sagely on the cover, and a number of articles and photo-features trying to explain this thing called style.

What we didn't particularly care for, though. was the magazine's assessment of sports that did or did not have style. Heli-skiing, wherein skiers are air-lifted to the top of some precipice so they can cascade down virgin slopes before being whisked away for an apres-ski cognac. was deemed to have oodles of style. No problem there: sign us up for your next heli-ski weekend, GQ. But what did disturb us was the sport listed in the "no style" column: dirt biking.

Now, O percent of Ci'cle World's readers have dirt bikes, and all of the editors here spend time in the saddle of motocross and enduro bikes-with a fair degree of style, we like to think. So we decided to call the New York offices of GQ and ask some questions. Such as: "What were your reasons for choosing dirt biking?": "Has any of your staff ever ridden a dirt bike?": and "Did

you know that Forbes magazine publisher Malcolm Forbes, whom you singled out as having style, is an avid motorcyclist who owns several dirt bikes?"

Three days of dialing only got us frustrated. But, while waiting for return calls that never came, we put together our own "Style. No Style" list. Keeping in mind that this is the month of April Fools Day. and that our tongues are firmly implanted in our cheeks, we present Cycle World's guide to who has style and who doesn't.

Oh, if you don'I agree with our choices, get on the blower and lets us know. You can bet we'll return your calls. Not to do so would not only show a lack of style, but a distinct lack of class.
