Heads-up Insurance

There might be many reasons for not wearing helmets, but Dairyland Insurance has done away with one of them: the expense. The Arizonabased company is offering the Sentry, a DOT-approved full-face helmet, for $39.95.

Dairyland’s president, Ed Davis, realizes that the wearing of helmets is a touchy subject with many motorcyclists. “We know that we cannot dictate safety to anyone,” he says. “There’s simply no way to force cyclists, a group of free-thinking individuals, to do something they don’t want to do. What we can do is reward safe behavior.”

To that end, Dairyland gives premium discounts to riders who have completed Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses, and, if state law permits, the company eliminates deductible clauses on medical payments for riders who wear helmets.

Of course, Dairyland's low-priced helmet offer is not completely altruistic. Company officials hope the price of the helmet will induce riders to spend the savings on insurance—preferably Dairyland’s.
