GLOVER CHASES MX TRIPLE CROWN
In an attempt to become the first rider in American motocross history to win all three National Championship Titles, Team Yamaha’s Broc Glover moves to the 250cc class for 1982. Glover already won Championships in the 125cc class (1978, 1979) and the 500cc class (1981). He could well win the 1982 250cc National Championship despite some serious competition from Honda’s Donnie Hansen. Yamaha’s Bob Hannah has agreed to move out of the 250cc class and back into the 125cc class where Hannah won his first National Championship in 1976. Yamaha reportedly enticed Hannah to switch class for an additional $100,000 over his original annual salary of around $250,000.
Hannah came close to winning all three National Championships, in one year, 1977, but mechanical breakdowns cost him two of the classes. After that the AMA passed a rule nicknamed “The Hannah Rule” which prevented a rider from competing in more than one class per season. If Glover clinches the Triple Crown of Motocross in 1982 he may be the only rider ever to do so, since the AMA is considering dropping the 125cc class from National to Regional status next year.—Jim Gianatsis
