COURTING ST. LOUIS
The American Motorcyclist Association is continuing the court battle against the City of St. Louis over a ban on motorcycling on some of the city streets.
The latest episode occurred at the Missouri Court of Appeals which has already ruled against the AMA in overturning a lower court order against St. Louis. The appeals court denied a motion for a rehearing, that being a required step of the march to the Missouri Supreme Court.
At issue is a city ordinance that prohibits motorcycles from being operated in city parks. Unfortunately many of the city’s major thoroughfares run through city parks. The ordinance was passed i% March, 1979 when the city said the public peace and safety were at stake. Tfrfc AMA sued and got an injunction against enforcement.
Since the ordinance was passed there has been a change on the city council and the AMA is working with the city staff to have a noise-control ordinance written that controls all types of vehicle noise, not just motorcycles.
