125 MX-A YOUNG MAN'S GAME
Broc Glover, a 17-year-old Californian, is the new AMA 125cc national motorcross champion, a title he owes in substantial measure to Yamaha Motors teammate Bob Hannah, the defending champ, and to an AMA rule which says there will not be duplicate prizes in case of ties.
The 1977 125cc series rolled into San Antonio’s Cyclerama, last date on the schedule, with a hot battle going between Glover, Hannah and Suzuki factory rider Danny LaPorte. Only 17 points separated continued on page 84 leader (LaPorte) from 3rd place (Hannah). Glover responded to the situation by winning both motos while LaPorte finished 3rd in each (behind Hannah). He thus wound up in a tie for 1st in the final points standings, but took the title on most wins— five in six races compared to LaPorte’s two.

It was the first time an AMA MX title has been decided this way, and Glover was the AMA’s youngest-ever national MX champ.
However, had it not been for teamwork, Glover would have finished the season as one of the AMA’s youngest-ever national MX runners-up. In the second moto of the day, Hannah pulled out a 24-second lead before slowing up to allow his younger teammate past. By that time it was clear that LaPorte was going to at least repeat his 3rd-place finish from the first moto, which meant that Hannah was statistically out of title contention. He moved over for Glover, then held LaPorte at bay to keep the trophy in the Yamaha camp.
Warren Reid (Honda) finished up a steady season with 7th and 6th place finishes to wind up 4th in the final standings.
