GIFT PACK

Take-along spray cans of Petrochem Instant Starting Fluid and Foaming Hand Klean are now offered in a gift pack for motorcycle owners by Ashland Chemical Co. The starting fluid, when sprayed into carburetor or airstream, enables the engine to fire immediately, even in cold, wet weather, saving batteries and ignition systems. The hand cleaner sprays on, needs no water, and gets rid of grease, grit and grime. The pack sells for about $3 at motorcycle dealers. Additional information may be obtained from Ashland Chemical Company, Specialty Products Division, Dept. CW-5, 10505 S. Painter Ave., Santa Fe Springs, CA 90270.

HODAKA REED INDUCTION

If you are planning to use Pabatco’s reed induction on your 100-cc Hodaka, D.H. Enterprises offers machine shop service to modify the cylinder specifically for the Pabatco reed. This applies only to the 100-cc engine, as the 90-cc machines have too small a bore size.

Part of the procedure is to carefully enlarge the inlet on the rear of the Hodaka racing cylinder in a milling machine to mate with the reed manifold. The work is done accurately.

The pair of auxiliary transfer passages on the rear of the cylinder are also added without chance for error. The 7/16-in.-wide ports are not ground into the barrel; they are machined in, using a milling machine. Each port is formed by overlapping a pair of cuts, giving a gentle port shape which does not interfere with proper piston ring action. The operation gives precise control of port height, width, and angle. Because of the special porting requirements on the rear of the cylinder, modified cylinders with “five-port grooves” should not be sent.

Note that these modifications are classified as a machine shop service, not a porting service. The completed cylinders will be straight from the milling machine, and will not be finished by hand. The work will be dimensionally correct, and can be run as is, or cleaned up by hand for that finishing touch.

The standard 100-cc ACE barrels (part number 922505) can also be modified to accept the reed. Extra work is required, as a larger gasket surface must be created by milling into the rear of the cylinder. Much work is also required to shape the small inlet passage to the size dictated by the reed manifold.

Price for modifying the ACE 100 racing cylinder (PN 932505) or the Super Rat cylinder (PN 932511) is $16. The standard ACE 100 cylinder can be modified for $22. The piston for any of these engines can also be modified to suit the requirement of the reed valve for $6 each.
