SANTA ROSA MILE
Rice Wins, But Mann Retains His Point Lead — Narrowly.
BSA MAY WIN the American Motorcycle Association No. 1 plate this year, if nothing out of the ordinary transpires in the remaining Nationals to be run.
At the Santa Rosa National, a one-mile oval dirt race, the BSA squad— composed of Jim Rice, Dick Mann, and Dave Aldana—had varying fortunes. Aldana crashed a three-cylinder Beeza with great verve and managed only an 11th place in the main event, riding a Twin. Both Mann and Rice rode Twins, Rice winning the main after leading 18 to 20 laps, and Mann placing 5th behind Rice, Jimmy Odom, Chuck Palmgren and Gene Romero.
Mann’s 5th was enough to keep him in the lead for the championship, with 572 points. Rice is 2nd in the standings with 550 points. Triumph teamster Romero is within striking distance with 552 points. Aldana, with 260 points, is 4th in the standings, hut somewhat out of striking distance. O
