WE HAVE COME A LONG WAY.

THIS MOTORCYCLE compares very closely with the catalog picture of the 1912 model Pope. The machine was manufactured in Hartford, Conn. by the Pope Mfg. Co. who started making motorcycles in 1908. Later, the company moved their motorcycle operation to Westfield, Mass. Motorcycle production ceased in 1918, but the old factory is still in use by the makers of the well known Columbia bicycles. This particular specimen appears to be a directdrive model which was advertised for $165.00 in 1912. For an additional $15.00 you could have an Eclipse engine-shaft clutch — a worthwhile investment! In 1912 you were glad there were no traffic lights. Every time you stopped this Pope, the engine stopped too. Starting was accomplished by pedaling off, bicycle-style, then dropping the compression release.
