16TH ANNUAL BONNEVILLE SPEED TRIALS
THE 16TH ANNUAL BONNEVILLE Speed Weeks, staged by the Southern California Timing Association on the famed Wendover, Utah salt flats, fell short of expectations this year due to extremely unsatisfactory salt conditions. Things got so bad that the week of high speed racing was cancelled two days before its scheduled completion date. Even so, only two really “good” days were enjoyed by the participants, and one day was a fair scene. Few fast times were recorded, and most knowledgeable Bonneville experts gave up early and went home to wait for next year. No major records were broken; high winds and water on the course spoiled the possibilities for an exciting meet. Many interesting bikes were in attendance, and all vowed to return next year. Most runs were spoiled by extremely wet and slick salt that only occasionally, when temperature and conditions were good, presented a proper surface for running. Best runs were made by lighter machines that seemed to have less trouble maintaining traction.
